The short version
- We don’t use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies, anywhere.
- pengo.chat measures visits with Plausible, which sets no cookies.
- The app uses only cookies it needs to sign you in and remember your settings.
- The widget stores a visitor ID in the browser so a conversation survives a page change.
This summary helps you find your way. The full text below is what applies.
What cookies are
Cookies are small text files a website stores in your browser. Local storage works in a similar way. We use both only to make Pengo work and remember your choices. This policy explains each one. It supplements our Privacy Policy.
On pengo.chat
Our marketing site and Help Center set no cookies of their own. They use:
| Name | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Plausible Analytics | Counts page views and sign-up clicks without cookies or personal identifiers. | None stored |
| Saved preferences | Remembers things like monthly or yearly pricing and Help Center articles you have read (local storage). | Until cleared |
| Pengo widget | Our own chat on pengo.chat. See “In the chat widget” below. | See below |
In the Pengo app
app.pengo.chat uses strictly necessary and preference cookies. They are first-party, and none are used for advertising.
| Name | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|
sb-…-auth-token | Keeps you signed in securely (Supabase authentication). | Session, refreshed while signed in |
pengo-account-id | Remembers which workspace you are working in. | 1 year |
pengo-property-id | Remembers which website you selected in the dashboard. | 1 year |
pengo-tz, pengo-density, pengo-nav-pinned | Remember your time zone and layout preferences. | 1 year |
pengo_attr | Records which page or campaign brought you to sign up, so we know what works. First-party only. | 90 days |
We also use Sentry to capture errors in the app, which helps us find and fix bugs. It does not set tracking cookies.
In the chat widget
When a business installs the Pengo widget, it stores the following in the visitor’s browser. These items are needed to provide the chat the visitor asks for, and they are not used to track visitors across other websites.
| Name | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|
pengo_visitor_* | A random visitor ID and short-lived token so the visitor’s conversation continues across pages and visits. | Until cleared |
pengo_chat_*, pengo_resume_* | The open conversation and widget state, so the chat reopens where the visitor left it. | Until cleared |
The business that runs the website decides whether to use the widget and is responsible for its own cookie notice and any consent banner. Pengo customers can describe the widget in their notice as a strictly necessary, first-party chat function.
Third parties
Some pages embed services that may set their own cookies when you use them, such as Stripe when you pay, or Google when you choose to sign in with Google. Their own cookie policies apply.
Your choices
You can block or delete cookies and local storage in your browser settings. Blocking strictly necessary cookies will stop you from signing in to the app, and clearing widget storage starts a new chat. Because we don’t use advertising cookies, there is nothing to opt out of for ads.
