Call your own backend with custom connectors

Add a custom connector so Pengo can call an HTTPS endpoint you run, signed with a secret, and use the answer in its reply or make a change in your system.

A custom connector lets Pengo call your own backend in the middle of a conversation: look up a loyalty balance, check an account, or create a record. Pengo uses the answer in its reply.

#Add a connector

  1. Go to Intelligence Actions and choose your website.

  2. Under Connectors, click New connector.

  3. Enter the Endpoint URL and, optionally, a Description that tells Pengo when to use it.

  4. Click Create and copy the Signing secret. It’s shown once, so store it with your backend.

#Verify each request

Pengo POSTs a signed JSON request to your endpoint. Before you answer, recompute the signature with your signing secret and compare it in constant time, the same way as for webhooks. Reject requests with a bad signature or an old timestamp.

#Choose how Pengo uses it

Custom connectors start on Ask first: Pengo prepares the call and a teammate approves it. You can switch a connector to Auto or Off in the Tools tab. See Choose how Pengo acts.

Common questions

How do I know a request came from Pengo?

Every request is signed with the connector's signing secret, using the same HMAC-SHA256 scheme as Pengo webhooks. Recompute the signature on your server and reject anything that doesn't match.

Does Pengo call my connector on its own?

Custom connectors start on Ask first, so a teammate approves each call. Set a connector to Auto once you're confident in it.
