Domains and multiple websites
Run Pengo on more than one website, switch between them in the dashboard, and limit the domains where each website's chat widget can load.
On this page
Every site you run Pengo on is a website in your workspace, with its own ID and snippet. This page covers when to add another website, how many your plan includes, how to switch between them, and how to stop a website’s widget loading on domains you don’t own.
#One website or several?
Each website in Pengo has its own:
- Website ID and snippet. The
propertyIdin the snippet tells Pengo which website a chat belongs to. - Widget settings, such as colours, home screen, forms and language.
- Pengo Intelligence setup and knowledge. A new website starts with no knowledge.
- Allowed domains list.
Your team, inbox and billing are shared across the workspace. For an overview of everything you can do across several sites, see multiple websites.
Add a separate website when two sites need a different look, different answers or separate reporting. If they’re really one site on two addresses, such as example.com and shop.example.com, you can use the same snippet on both.
#Add a website
-
Go to Settings Workspace Websites and click Add website.
Only the workspace owner can add, edit or delete websites.
-
Enter a Website name and the Website URL, then click Create.
Pengo uses the URL to confirm the widget is installed and to train Pengo Intelligence.
-
Choose whether Pengo should learn from the site.
Click Learn from your site’s address to have Pengo read up to 25 pages in the background, or Not now to add knowledge later.
-
Click Install widget on the new website’s card and copy its snippet.
Each website has its own snippet. Make sure you paste the right one on the right site.
#How many websites your plan includes
| Plan | Websites included | Extra websites |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 1 | Not available |
| Starter | 1 | Not available. Upgrade to Team for more. |
| Team | 3 | $10/month each ($8/month billed annually) |
| Business | 10 | $10/month each ($8/month billed annually) |
| Plus | 10 | $10/month each ($8/month billed annually) |
| Enterprise | Unlimited | Not needed |
When you reach your limit, Pengo shows “Website limit reached” when you try to add another.
To buy extra websites, open Billing from your account menu. On the plan’s Websites line, use + and − to change how many extra websites you pay for. If you’re on a trial without a card, choose a plan first. See plans and limits for everything else each plan includes.
#Paused websites
If your plan allows fewer websites than you have, for example after moving to a smaller plan or removing extra websites, Pengo keeps your oldest websites live and pauses the rest. A paused website shows Paused on your plan on its card and Paused in the website switcher. Its widget doesn’t show on your site, but its conversations, contacts and settings are kept, and it comes back when you upgrade or add extra websites.
#Switch between websites
With two or more websites, the website switcher in the dashboard header lets you choose All websites or a single website. Pages such as the inbox and live visitors follow that choice. The switcher also has a Manage websites link to Settings Workspace Websites .
Settings that belong to one website, such as the widget’s look or allowed domains, show a Website picker at the top of the page. Check it before you change anything, so you edit the right site.
#Allowed domains
By default, a website’s widget loads on any domain where its snippet is pasted. To stop anyone else from using your snippet on their site, limit it to your own domains.
-
Go to Settings Security Allowed domains and pick the website at the top if you have more than one.
-
Turn on Restrict widget to allowed domains.
-
Type a domain, such as
example.com, and click Add domain. Repeat for every domain the site uses. -
Click Save changes.
Once it’s on:
- The widget only loads on the domains in the list. On any other domain, the chat bubble doesn’t appear and browsers refuse to show the chat window.
- Each entry matches one exact domain.
example.comdoesn’t coverwww.example.comorshop.example.com, so add each one, including staging domains you test on. - An empty list blocks everywhere. If the setting is on with no domains, the widget doesn’t load on any site.
- The list also counts for detection. A page on an allowed domain marks the website as installed, even if it isn’t the Website URL’s domain.
Changes can take a few minutes to reach visitors, and a browser that was blocked remembers it for up to an hour. Test in a new private window after changing the list. If the widget stops showing after you turn this on, see verify your installation.
#Delete a website
On the website’s card in Settings Workspace Websites , the owner can hover and click the delete (bin) button. The widget stops working on that site and its conversations are removed. If you only want to stop the chat for a while, remove the snippet from your site instead.
Common questions
Can I use one snippet on two domains?
Yes. The same website can run on several domains, such as your main site and a shop subdomain. They share one set of widget settings and one Intelligence setup. Add a separate website when you want them to differ.
What happens to a paused website?
Its widget doesn't show, but its conversations, contacts and settings stay. It comes back when your plan or extra websites allow it again.
