Add Pengo to your website

Copy your Pengo snippet, paste it before the closing body tag on your site, and check that the chat widget is live. Works on any website.

Getting started 2 min read Updated
On this page

Adding Pengo to your site means pasting one short snippet into your website’s code. It takes about five minutes, and once it’s in, the chat bubble appears on every page that has it.

#Find your snippet

Your snippet is shown in the last step of setup. After setup, you’ll find it in the dashboard:

  1. Go to Settings Workspace Websites .

  2. On your website’s card, click Install widget. Once the widget has been seen on your site, the button reads Install code.

  3. In the Install on your website dialog, pick your platform: HTML, WordPress, Shopify, Webflow, Wix, Squarespace, Next.js or Google Tag Manager.

  4. Click Copy.

The snippet in your dashboard already contains your website ID. In the example below, YOUR_PROPERTY_ID stands in for it.

Pengo snippet
<!-- Pengo Widget -->
<script>
  (function() {
    // A stub, so pengo('identify', …) and other calls work before the widget has loaded.
    window.pengo = window.pengo || function() { (window.pengo.q = window.pengo.q || []).push(arguments); };
    window.pengo.propertyId = 'YOUR_PROPERTY_ID';
    window.pengo.q = window.pengo.q || [];
    var script = document.createElement('script');
    script.async = true;
    script.src = 'https://app.pengo.chat/embed.js?v=2';
    var firstScript = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0];
    firstScript.parentNode.insertBefore(script, firstScript);
  })();
</script>

#Paste it on your site

Paste the snippet just before the closing </body> tag on every page. Most websites have a shared footer or layout template, so pasting it there once covers the whole site. Then publish or deploy your changes.

Using a website builder or CMS? The dialog shows the steps for each platform, and there’s a step-by-step guide for each one:

#Check that it’s live

  1. Open your website in a new tab and look for the chat bubble in the corner.

  2. Go back to the install dialog and click Check again. When Pengo sees the widget, the status changes from Not detected to Detected.

On the Websites page, each website’s card shows its install status:

StatusWhat it means
InstalledThe widget has loaded on your site. The card shows when it was last seen.
Not detectedPengo hasn’t seen the widget on your site yet.
Not seen latelyThe widget hasn’t loaded for 7 days or more. Check the snippet is still on your site.

For more ways to check, see Verify your installation.

#Send the code to your developer

If someone else looks after your website, you don’t need to copy and forward the code yourself. In the install dialog, enter their email address under Someone else manages the site? and click Email instructions. Pengo sends them the code and the steps for the platform you selected.

#If the widget doesn’t show up

  • Check the page you opened. The widget only appears on pages that have the snippet.
  • Publish your changes. Many site builders keep edits as a draft until you publish.
  • Clear your cache. If your site uses a caching plugin or a CDN, clear it so visitors get the updated page.
  • Check your allowed domains. If Restrict widget to allowed domains is on in Settings Security Allowed domains , the widget only loads on domains in that list. Add your site’s domain, including any staging domain.
  • Check your plan. If the website card says Paused on your plan, your plan allows fewer websites than you’ve added. Upgrade to turn it back on. See Plans and limits.

Still stuck? Email support@pengo.chat with your website address.

Common questions

Do I need to paste the snippet on every page?

Yes, the widget only shows on pages that have the snippet. The easiest way is to paste it once in a shared footer or layout template that every page uses.

Can I send the code to my developer?

Yes. In the install dialog, enter their email under "Someone else manages the site?" and click Email instructions. They get the code and the steps for the platform you picked.

The status still says Not detected. What now?

Open a page of your site that has the snippet, then click Check again. Pengo only detects the widget after it has loaded on your site at least once.
