Install Pengo on Shopify

Add the Pengo chat widget to your Shopify store by pasting one snippet into your theme's theme.liquid file. Takes about five minutes.

Adding Pengo to Shopify takes one edit to your theme. You paste the snippet into theme.liquid, the layout file every storefront page uses, and the chat bubble appears across your store.

#Add the snippet to your theme

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store › Themes.

  2. Next to your current theme, click the … (actions) button and choose Edit code.

  3. In the file list, open Layout › theme.liquid.

  4. Find the closing </body> tag near the end of the file and paste the snippet just above it.

  5. Click Save.

  6. Open your store in a new tab. The chat bubble appears in the corner.

#Connecting Shopify is a separate step

Installing the widget puts the chat on your store. It doesn’t connect Pengo to your Shopify data.

Pengo also has a Shopify connection that shows a visitor’s recent orders right in the inbox. Where it’s available for your workspace, you’ll find it under Settings Integrations Shopify . You don’t need it for the chat to work, and setting it up doesn’t install the widget for you.

#Check that it works

Open your store in a private window and look for the bubble, then confirm that Pengo has detected the install. Verify your installation walks through it, with a troubleshooting checklist if the bubble doesn’t show.

If your store uses a myshopify.com address and a custom domain, and you turn on allowed domains, add both. See domains and multiple websites.

Common questions

Will the chat show on the checkout page?

No. Shopify's checkout doesn't use your theme's theme.liquid file, so the widget shows on your storefront pages but not during checkout.

I switched themes and the chat disappeared. Why?

The snippet lives in the theme you edited. Each theme has its own theme.liquid, so add the snippet to the new theme as well.
